Greening Youth Foundation (GYF, gyfoundation.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture environmental stewardship among diverse youth and young adults and expose them to conservation careers. Participating students gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
Opportunity:
GYF seeks a Public Health Intern with the NPS Office of Public Health reporting to a supervisor based in Seattle, Washington. This one-year internship will extend from October 5, 2020, through September 30, 2021. The position will be remote, working in the Pacific Time zone.
Position Tasks:
This internship is a unique opportunity for an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral-level student to gain experience in health promotion to advance the role of parks as a health resource with the National Park Service (NPS). This Intern works closely within the NPS Office of Public Health to advance the NPS Healthy Parks Healthy People 2.0 Strategy, and to build awareness, capacity and support for the adoption of promising health promotion practices in parks. In 2021 the Office of Public Heath will be celebrating 100 years of health, commemorating the formal partnership between the National Park Service and the US Public Health Service. The Office of Public Health delivers the highest quality professional health services to protects and promote the health and well-being of visitors in our parks.
Projects envisioned for support include: 1) Creates a tool-kit to support a "plug and play” approach to health promotion in parks; 2) Assists with planning, execution and evaluation of health promotion events in partnership with Office of Public Health field consultants; 3) Serves as a task force member of the National Park Service and Public Health Service 100-year anniversary in 2021. This position will also be responsible for working in collaboration with the Centennial Committee to support national campaigns and signature events, including print, digital, and social media communication channels.
Requirements/Qualifications:
Undergraduates (rising juniors or seniors only) and bachelor's, master's/doctoral candidates (B.S., B.A, PhD, MPH, MD, other) are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to public health majors. Must be skilled in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and following up assignments with minimal direction, communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; providing project coordination in a team environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; as well as web-based communication tools.
Position Compensation:
The selected intern(s) will be compensated at a rate of $15 per hour. Housing and moving costs will not be covered. This position is expected to be remote. The intern will be furnished with a computer, a phone (for hot spot), NPS e-mail account and office supplies.
