General Maintenance- Carpenter

Job Details:

Under the direction of the Facilities Superintendent and Facilities Manager, perform journeyman quality work in maintenance, repair, construction, alteration, forming, framing and finishing of buildings, and facilities; remodeling and construction of buildings and equipment; performs other related duties required.
 
Responsibilities of the Carpenter/General Maintenance at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) will include but are not limited to:
  • Perform minor fixes such as repairing broken locks, filling gaps on walls, etc.
  • Collaborate with workers and other professionals during renovations
  • Reports to Facilities Manager for issues
  • Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing of all type’s equipment. Install, adjust, repair, and replace various building components such as casework, shelving, door and window hardware, or ceiling tiles
  • Operate hand and power equipment such as saws, jointers, sanders, planers, and other tools typical for the trade
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repair of general buildings and grounds
  • Works with materials such as wood, plastic, fiberglass, or drywall
  • Assist clients with the fabrication and operation of experimental equipment and apparatus
  • Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissors-lifts
  • Load and unload materials and supplies
  • Operate vehicles such as DISL vans and trucks to transports tools, equipment, and personnel to various job sites

Job Requirements:

Education:
  • HS Diploma/GED preferred
Experience:
  • Basic knowledge of general carpentry, finish carpentry, framing in commercial or residential work
  • Experience with using hand tools and electrical tools
  • Ability to read technical manuals and drawings
  • Basic computer skills needed to record-keeping and communication
  • General knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and general maintenance
Physical Abilities:
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Standing, lift overhead, squatting and ability to crawl in small spaces required
  • Work outdoors in various conditions including heat and humidity, rain, dust, noise, and cold
  • Physical stamina and dexterity  
Interpersonal Abilities:
  • Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with particular attention to excellent customer service
  • Follow all DISL policies and procedures
  • Must be able to work independently and without close supervision or with a team
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Detailed oriented
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement projects
